What is Rule No. 1 in learning to dance Salsa?

HAVE FUN while making progress!

What shoes do I wear for Salsa?

It is best to wear leather sole (or other smooth type sole) shoes to make turns easier. Most ladies find it easier to dance in heels.

What clothes do I wear for Salsa?

Most guys tend to wear jeans/trousers and a shirt or T-shirt. Ladies equally enjoy wearing jeans and light tops, skirts or dresses (avoid lengthy skirts/dresses or anything that could get caught). Due to the nature of salsa you're likely to get warm, so dress accordingly!

Can I attend classes on my own, without a partner?

Absolutely yes! We change partners every few minutes during classes so everyone gets a turn. However we invite you to bring along your own dancing partner whenever possible to facilitate an even gent/lady number split.

Why do Salsa teachers rotate dance partners during class?

There are a few good reasons for this. Firstly Salsa is a social dance and we imagine you'd like to meet people and get to know other fellow Salsa learners. It also helps develop the ability to lead or follow better as everyone is an individual and leads or follows in slightly different ways. It also gives everyone the opportunity to come to class even if numbers are not exactly matched along a leader/follower split. Finally, doing the occasional round without a partner gives you a chance to observe the teachers/others more closely and check your own progress.

Can I dance with my partner/husband only, during classes?

Yes, that is absolutely fine if you prefer. However you may in time want to consider rotating partners like most do, as this tends to make you a better leader or follower. Dancing with only one partner tends to make one less able to dance with other people later, as you get so used to the way your regular partner leads or follows.

I'm a girl, can I dance with my lady friend/another woman when there aren't too many men in classes?

Yes, that is ok if you prefer. However we try to avoid this situation wherever possible because if you begin dancing Salsa as a leader (usually the man's role in Salsa) then you'll have to stick with that role until the end of the course or for the equivalent number of drop-in sessions. You could then retake the course as a follower if you so desired.

What can I expect to achieve by the end of the Beginners Course?

The Beginners Course is designed to give a solid foundation in dancing Salsa as a social dance. Men/leaders should feel that they can invite anyone to the Salsa dance floor and lead them comfortably and elegantly through basic but varied moves and techniques. Likewise ladies/followers should feel that they can comfortably recognise their partner's leads and execute the steps and turns they indicate. Most of all, you should all feel that you're having fun dancing Salsa!

What can I do to make the best progress learning Salsa?

Firstly and most importantly have faith that you will learn to dance Salsa! There is no such thing as 2-left-feet! Be patient with yourself (and others!) Pay attention and ask questions whenever they arise in your mind. Regular attendance and participating in our social dancing after class will give you the practice you need and best chance of good solid progress!

REMEMBER RULE No.1: HAVE FUN!
